It’s the little things that count…and also kick your booty

As a 5’1″ individual, it may come as a shock to everyone that I tend to embrace the big things over the small (and by shock I mean not at all). I like tall shoes. I talk loudly. I can spill a glass of water across the table with one giant, spastic lift of my fork.


So, the thought of purposely choosing small, isolated movements as exercise over big jumping jacks and long runs was something that never occurred to me until I took a Barre3 class.  Continue reading

And my Pilates saga continues…

Last night, I attended a class at Pil-oga-robic. It’s a studio in NE Portland that combines Pilates, yoga, cardio and strength training. Kind of like Pilates/yoga/cardio… or… Pil-oga-robics.


The p-o-r WALL class I took felt akin to bootcamp classes I’ve taken in the past, just with the  added element of grace from reformers and bungee resistance instead of burpees and push-ups.  Continue reading

STFU, I like yoga now?

Yoga and I are like unrequited lovers. Yoga always looks so good, so I try it out and yoga tells me that it will love me forever and then I flake out on yoga and forget to call. Then, yoga is all like, “it’s okay baby, I’ll take you back,” 6 months later when I notice it again.


But, this last class that I took at YoYoYogi has me smitten. So smitten, in fact, that I was practicing crow pose in my own house because I couldn’t stop thinking about yoga. WHO AM I?? Continue reading

Barre3 in the park like a boss

To celebrate their 5 year anniversary, Barre3 offered a free class to the public this weekend. The class took place in The Fields park in the Pearl District and thankfully Portland got the memo and decided to put on the most beautiful sun-fest for everyone that attended. Continue reading

My first hot yoga experience: Core Power Yoga

I have to admit something to you: in general, I find yoga to be pretty boring. It’s just so slow and relaxing, and let’s be honest, I’m clearly too high strung for meditation. I suppose this is precisely why I need to do more yoga. So, my friends convinced me to try out Core Power Yoga in NW. They have an awesome special where you can sign up for a week of free yoga which includes the ever so frightening HOT YOGA class.

I decided to take my first ever hot yoga class while Portland was going through a heatwave and I was sick with a nasty cold. This was maybe not the smartest decision I’ve ever made but I came armed with a box of tissues and two water bottles like a total nerd. Let me just start off by saying that hot yoga is no joke, guys. There’s a lot (I mean, A LOT) of sweating involved and I’m pretty sure it’s the most legal high you can get while exercising. It was mentally challenging and I may have gone through 102309173092173 tissues in the process, but I swear the amount of bodily expulsion helped me kick my cold and had me feeling totally detoxed.
